2016 Criteria for AGP Inclusion

To be awarded AGP status, a wine will need to be:

  1. A current or future release wine
  2. Adjudged to be of a high quality level
  3. Certified Wine of Origin Franschhoek

1.) A current or future release wine

Wines eligible for AGP status must be current or future-release wines only. Wines originating from Vinoteque or Museum class stock will not be eligible for AGP status. In addition, previous AGP status classified wines will also not be eligible for inclusion. Once a wine from a specific vintage has been awarded, AGP status will only be awarded once, in the form of a sequentially-numbered quality/origin AGP seal.

2.) Adjudged to be of a high quality level

In order to identify and celebrate the wines which perform exceptionally well throughout the year, selected acclaimed domestic and international wine ratings will be used as the basis for the criteria process.

Successful producers/wines eligible for AGP status will be allowed to use the AGP origin/quality seal on their recognized bottles of wine. Through the administration of FWVTA, producers will be provided with sequentially numbered AGP origin/seals only for wines satisfying the criteria listed in the sections above.

At the end of each year, a celebration event will be hosted, highlighting the year's selection of successful AGP classified wines. The objectives of such an event will be to highlight not only the awarded wines, but also the personalities involved in their production as well as aknowledging the AGP Producer of the Year.

The AGP founders reserve the right to revise the consideration criteria on an annual basis.

AGP Celebration 2016. 10 Ambassador wines announced.

There was much anticipation and excitement surrounding the Appellation Grand Prestige Celebration, which was held on Friday the 8th of January 2016 at Foliage, in Franschhoek. AGP was formally established in 2013 with the goal of rewarding producers who focus on bottling high quality, Wine of Origin Franschhoek wines. For the first two years, the initiative highlighted Franschhoek's historically top-performing grape varieties, namely; Chardonnay, Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2015 tasting, however, was opened to all Wine of Origin Franschhoek wines, made in any style. The idea here, is that over time, the tasting process will organically determine which grape varieties and wine styles perform best and eventually a finite set of those varieties and styles will be eligible for entry in the future. In 2015, ninety-two wines were entered and evaluated in a blind tasting by an independent panel of five judges. Ten wines were identified as being outstanding enough to become 2016's Franschhoek Ambassador Wines. Sponsored by Chris Wium and Cork Supply South Africa, these wines were revealed at the AGP Celebration last week, where the invited guests were given the opportunity to sample the wines, while enjoying the delicious culinary creations of chef Chris Erasmus and the Foliage team. With six of the ten wines containing Chardonnay, Semillon or Cabernet Sauvignon, there is a clear indication that these varieties are still front-runners as far as quality wine production in the valley is concerned. Congratulations to the following producers for the wines below as they become the Franschhoek Ambassador Wines for 2016:
  • Black Elephant Vintners Brut MCC NV (Chardonnay/Pinot Noir)
  • Moreson Mercator 2013 (Chardonnay)
  • Franschhoek Vineyards Semillon 2012
